The Old White Bear

Cross Hills, Keighley

We are a family run traditional village pub serving great locally sourced food which is cooked to order and excellent local ales from Naylors.

The Old White Bear is the oldest building in the village Cross Hills and was built in 1735. It has previously been a hotel, a brothel, a council meeting place and a dance hall. The council met frequently here to discuss the Leeds and Liverpool canal and decided where to cut through the land here! It has also been the site for White Bear and Naylors breweries. Naylors brewery is now situated less than half a mile away and is always on pump.

Some of the beams used to build the pub are believed to come from a naval ship which took part in the battles against The Spanish Armada called “The Old White Bear” hence the name!

The building is full of character, most of which has been collected over the years by the locals. The building itself has walls 24inches thick which is possibly why it is still going strong!

There are two real fires which come to life in winter and a sun-trap beer garden for the summer. We also have a darts and doms team (who won the league in 2009) and we are one of only 3 pubs in Craven to have the traditional ‘Ring the Bull’ game.

The Old White Bear

All of us at the Bear were saddened this week to hear the news of the closure of Naylor’s Brewery.

The brewery began on our premises back in 2001, whilst Naylor’s owned the pub, moving to its home just down the road in Crosshills with the sale of the pub to current owners Pickles Pubs in 2006.

Despite this, Naylor’s beers have been a permanent fixture on our bar over all these years, with countless different brews being served, and always well received.

The closure of course means over the coming weeks you will see new beers on the bar at the OWB, and we hope these can mirror the quality and taste of the ones we have had the pleasure of serving for so long.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Stephen and Robert and all their staff for all their hard work in producing fantastic beers, and as not only suppliers but close friends, wish them all the very best in whatever they choose to do next.

Cheers 🍻

So sad! Great drinks & great service with a smile.

I genuinely will miss Yorkshire Bitter it's been my favourite for years now. Steve and Robert and their mum started at the Bear the same time I moved into the area so I can say they have been a part of my life here and Steve lives at the bottom of my garden. Good luck guys and I hope there is still some in the pump at the Bear tomorrow.

Awwwwww. How sad 😥 I didn't know they were closing

Another great Keighley brewery is Bridgehouse Brewery
